The Truth Behind Farmed Fish…

If you don’t see a ‘wild’ label at the supermarket or on the menu, the fish you’re eating is most likely farmed.

Beginning in the 1970s, the aquaculture (fish farming) industry began with small fish farms established off the coast of British Columbia. Salmon Farms have since made appearances along the western Canadian coast, putting the natural environment of the Pacific Ocean, and the Wild Pacific Salmon stock at serious risk.  The species of non-native, Atlantic salmon, which are pen-raised at fish farm facilities, provide the perfect environment for disease outbreaks, which affect wild salmon populations.  Furthermore, pen-raised Atlantic salmon present the risk of escaping farms and aggressively diminishing the native wild salmon stock.

In addition to being detrimental to the environment, the consumption of farm- raised salmon is linked to potential health problems.  Farm-raised fish contain up to 10 times the amount of PCBs and dioxins than does wild salmon.  In addition, the food given to farmed salmon does not contain natural sources of coloring, resulting in the flesh’s grayish coloring.  Accordingly, fish farms market their product only after the flesh has been colored using chemical additives.

Our Fish…

The Alaskan salmon fisheries have been labeled well managed and sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council, an independent and international organization.  By joining us in eating our fish and supporting our vision, you become part of the cycle of nature, which has tied human communities to the land and to the spiritual for thousands of years.

Our Salmon species are caught with either ‘hook and line’ methods in Southeast Alaska, or with a gillnet in the western part of the state.  Both methods of fishing have an extremely low percentage of bycatch, which means that virtually no other species are harmed during the process.

Our Alaskan shrimp is exclusively caught in pots, on the ocean floor.  This method is chosen as an alternative to trawling the ocean floor—a standard in most shrimp fisheries—which is devastating to the ocean floor environment.

Our Pacific lingcod and sashimi grade albacore are also caught with ‘hook and line’.

While we promote a healthy environment by offering only sustainable species of seafood, we are also committed to the quality of our products—all of our seafood is quickly-frozen, which, contrary to common belief, saves the quality, and the ‘freshness’, of the fish.  In addition, all our products are handled individually, with care, one at a time.  We can’t wait for you to try our delicious seafood!
